Meet the latest member of our kokako family, the chick in the nest we have been watching. We don’t know the gender and it doesn’t have a name but I think Tūmanako, (Hope) would be appropriate.

Greg, our bird kaitiaki (guardian) climbed to the nest to check on the number and size of the chicks. There is only one, but it’s healthy and well fed and today will receive identification bands, all going well.
The nest is 8 to 9 meters above ground at the top of a tree fern so it takes a really long ladder to get to it. Wish us luck.
This is fantastic news. I so hope young Tūmanako thrives.
