21 years of pest control have led to an increase of small birds in the garden, among them the little white head. At this time of the year they hang out in gangs and sweep through the garden picking up spiders and insects as they go, chattering all the way.

I only found out about whiteheads recently when reading about the mohua. Didn’t realise there was enough to have “gangs” sweeping through the garden.. that’s great!

When we first came to the farm, seeing a whitehead was a treat, they were so uncommon but like all the small birds, they’ve flourished with the pest control, along with fantails, robins and tom tits. It’s only the kokako that are still struggling.
