Meet the residents: Red Admiral Butterfly, kahu kura

The native red admiral butterfly is found only in New Zealand. The caterpillar’s feed on stinging nettle leaves but the butterflies have come to prefer buddleia flowers and other nectar producing plants. This one enjoyed supping on rosemary and koromiko flowers. They can live for 9 months, if they survive winter, a great age for a butterfly.

  1. When we lived at Papatowai in the Catlins we always saw Red Admirals. When we lived in Dunedin and in Gore we always saw the Yellow Admirals. The yellows seem to be incredibly fast and flit around everywhere at top speed. Lovely photos Wendy!
