Cicada shell

Step into the bush at this time of the year and you’ll be deafened by the calls of male cicadas. There are about 40 species of cicada or kihikihi in New Zealand and summer is all about mating. The nymph lives underground for at least 3 years and when conditions are just right, it crawls out onto a tree trunk or fence post at dawn to break out of its old skin. The adult lives only a month or 2, just long enough to produce the next generation.
