Meet the Residents: Toutouwai – North Island Robin

img_2917

The social little toutouwai’s song fills the bush with joy. He  trills and warbles and whistles for up to an hour, on and on and on. A DOC friend told me his song is all about telling neighbouring males to stay away, ‘this is my place.’ He spends much of his time scrabbling in the leaf litter on the forest floor and will surprise you by dropping like a stone from high in the trees to land lightly beside you.
