Coup d’etat

The masses have risen, deposed the despot. No, I’m not talking about Australian politics. It’s the cherry tree; the troll has been overthrown, vanquished, relegated to the ranks of the proletariat. Poor old tui, his days as supreme ruler ended by an onslaught from his fellows backed by sneaky korimako (bellbirds). He’s been overwhelmed by numbers. The feasting goes on all day with beautiful music, not all of it (none probably) friendly.

Some time ago, I wrote this poem about early morning tui.

Tui, avian alarm clock.

Gold tips the tree tops

and slowly bleeds

down the hillside

banishing dark and

nudging the birds awake.

Tui beats the daylight

and all the other birds.

Perhaps it is him

who wakes the sun.
